Andrea Carter Prescott was the mother of two girls named Lillian and Charlotte.
Lillian grew
up to live on a horse farm and Charlotte was a librarian. One day, Charlotte went to Lillian’s horse
farm and asked her if she would go to her library.
Lillian said, “Soon.”
Then she
picked her favorite horse and rode off into the woods by her farm. Charlotte went with her. Lillian’s horse had a diamond on her nose and
her name was Diamond. Charlotte’s horse
had a black spot on its eye and spots on her.
Her name was Spots.
As they were
riding in the woods, Lillian saw a horse with a black stripe on her mane. Her hooves were white and smooth, and she had
a black spot on the side of her body.
Then, she galloped away.
Charlotte looked the way that Lillian looked, and Lillian said, “Did you
see that?”
“See
what?” Charlotte asked.
“The horse.”
Then they both
headed back to the horse farm. They went
in the house, and Lillian brought some coffee.
They took a sip of the coffee, then put it down.
Lillian said,
“That horse I was talking about had a black stripe on her mane, her hooves were
white, and she had a black spot on her side.
I want to see her again.”
They went back
to the woods with their horses. This
time, Charlotte was looking. They went
far into the woods. The woods were dark,
and the tree branches were shaking in the wind.
Charlotte was scared, but Lillian protected her, and she didn’t feel
afraid anymore.
Then the horse
came out from the trees. Lillian got off
her horse and stroked the mysterious horse’s soft mane. Charlotte looked. She got down.
The horse backed up, snorting softly.
Charlotte tried to go closer, but the horse didn’t want to come closer
to her.
Lillian
whispered, “Shh, it’s alright, girl.”
She petted her mane, while she spoke soothing words.
The horse got
quieter and quieter, until she stopped backing away. And then Charlotte petted her soft, curly
mane. The horse then knew she was
friendly.
So Lillian
took the horse to her horse farm and named her Scarlett. She trained the horse, and it worked
well. But when she tried to ride her, Lillian
fell off the horse.
“I’m alright,”
she told Charlotte, as her sister ran towards her. “Let’s go in the house. Besides, I’m hungry for lunch.”
The day passed
quickly, and they went to bed. The next
morning, they heard a loud nicker coming from the barn. The girls found Scarlett laying in the hay
and saw that she had a cut on her leg.
“Oh, no,”
gasped Lillian. “She must have left
during the night and is now hurt!”
Charlotte had
once gone to nursing school, so she knew what to do. She cleaned the scrape, then bandaged it.
After
breakfast, they went to Charlotte’s library, where Lillian picked out the book
called How to Care for Injured Horses.
Then, two boys came into the library.
Their names were Erik and Luke. As
the days went by and they got to know each other, Lillian and Luke, and
Charlotte and Erik got engaged.
A few weeks later, they got married, and rode off home on Scarlett together.
Such a creative story! I loved reading about Lillian and Charlotte!
