God Saves: Another Story about the Prescott Family

Story #2
by Hannah M.
This story is dedicated to Lilly and my big sister, Claire.

PART 1
“Let’s race to that tree, Susie!” eight year old Jared Riley Prescott shouted as he pointed to a big oak tree. Then he urged his horse into a gallop.
Jared was staying at his grandmother and uncles’ ranch, the Circle C Ranch, because his mama, Andrea Rose Carter Prescott, was having another child.
“I’m coming!” Susianna Mae Carter replied. She urged her horse Buttercup into a gallop. Susie was the same age as Jared, and she was just as competitive in horse racing.
“I won!” Jared shouted a little bit later as he passed the oak tree. “Let’s take care of the horses and then let’s go see Rose.”
Rose Andrea Prescott was Jared’s three year old sister. She was not old enough to ride, of course, so she would stay inside and listen while her Uncle Mitch told her stories.
***
Later that day, Jared and Susie were out walking with Rose. Jared was really excited because today was the day where his papa, Riley Jared Prescott, was supposed to take Rose and him home.
Then Jared heard fast hoof beats and saw Riley on his horse Dakota. He should have brought the wagon, Jared thought.
Then Ellianna (Ellie) Coulter Carter, Jared’s aunt, came out of the ranch house. “Hello, Riley!” she greeted.
“Howdy,” Riley answered politely. Turning to Jared he said, “Come on inside.”
Once they all got inside and joined Elizabeth, Mitch, and Chad, Riley made the announcement that Jared and Rose now had a little sister. Her name was Violet Alyssa. Riley also said, “Jared, you and Rose need to stay here for a while longer.”
“Why, Papa?” Jared asked in surprise.
“Because Violet has the flu,” Riley answered.
“Can’t that be deadly to a newborn baby?” Mitch asked.
“Yes, it can,” Elizabeth answered. “I’ll come over and help Andrea and the baby,” she added.
“Thank you,” Riley said gratefully.
“How is Andi doing?” Chad asked.
“She’s okay health wise, but she’s very upset about the baby,” Riley answered with a sad sigh.
“Well, I better go upstairs and get ready to go,” Elizabeth said.
“Wait,” Riley said, “we should pray, first.”
And so they did.

PART 2
A few days later, Jared and Rose were home at Memory Creek Ranch. Violet’s fever was gone, but it had left her very weak, though she was very beautiful. She had a very tiny bit of dark brown or black hair on her head, blue eyes (like Andi), she was very pale (unlike Andi), and she had very pinkish-red lips.
Just then, Doc Weaver and Riley came out of Andi and Riley’s bedroom. Jared asked instantly, “Will Violet live?”
“It’s all up to the good Lord now,” the doctor answered as he took his leave.
Jared sat back in his seat as his heart fell.

PART 3
“Mama, can I go see Violet?” Jared asked.
“Ok, just be quiet; she’s taking a nap,” Andi said.
“Alright, Mama.”
***
“Lord, please make Violet get strong, and please make her live. Amen,” Jared prayed quietly as he kneeled next to Violet’s crib. So far, Violet had almost never moved, and when she had, it was a very small amount each time. Now Violet woke up and did a very small yawn.
“Hello, Violet,” Jared whispered to her. She made a little cooing sound.
Just then the door opened and Rose walked in.
“Be quiet, Rose,” Jared gently warned.
“Ok, Jawed,” she whispered. “I want to see Viowet, too.”
Jared and Rose played gently with Violet, and when Andi peeked into the room, she wished she had a photographer there to take a picture of them.

PART 4
With much prayer, Violet became stronger and stronger in body and in voice. Soon she was screaming with happiness all the time! It was really loud during the day, but at least she slept well at night, and it was a blessing that she could be loud at all.
One day Jared and Rose were trying to get Violet to stop crying. Once she stopped, Jared prayed: “Thank you, Lord, for healing Violet and making her grow strong and healthy!”
“Thanks, God,” little Rose added.
“Amen,” Jared and Rose said together.
