Taffy and the Sugar

 by Heather Jones (ages 6-9)

Andi Carter sat in the dining room at breakfast one Saturday morning with her family. She was eating breakfast when her brother Mitch asked, "Melinda, please pass the butter."

Melinda passed the butter. Then she said, “Can everyone come outside to the yard to see the flowers I planted?”

"Yes, I believe we can." calmly answered Mother.

Everyone, including Andi, got up and started for the front door.  While they were all outside looking at Melinda's flowers, the ranch hand Roy came inside to talk to Chad, her older brother, through the back door.  Roy saw they were outside through the window, so he went out the front door, accidentally leaving the back door open.

Out in the backyard, Andi’s foal, named Taffy, was nosing around the paddock gate.  Then Taffy noticed the latch.  She bobbed her head up and down and the latch popped open.  She was free!  Taffy started to gallop around and trotted up the porch steps.  She smelled pancakes and came inside through the open back door.

Taffy trotted from room to room trying to find the place with the wonderful smell.  Finally, she was in the dining room where she began to help herself to the pancakes.  Taffy struggled to get to the sugar bowl. She succeeded, but she knocked it over. She finally finished. Then a happy little Taffy went into the kitchen.  In the kitchen,Taffy began to inspect the counters. She saw a basket with something white peeking out of it.

Sugar!”  thought Taffy.

She began to shove the basket with her nose. KER-PLOP! Taffy looked at the floor. Some white stuff was on the floor with a yellow circle in the middle.

BLINK. BLINK. Taffy looked up at the basket as an egg fell right on her eye!

PLOP, PLOP, PLOP, PLOP, PLOP, PLOP, PLOP, PLOP!

Dozens of eggs spotted Taffy.  In fact, they were yellow spots. Taffy just stared at the eggs. She looked around to make sure no one was looking. After all this, the back door had blown shut. So she trotted up the staircase instead.

In the hallway upstairs, she walked from room to room until she found Andi’s room. The door was open. She peeked inside. No one was there. So she went inside. She jumped onto the bed and layed down and fell asleep.

After everyone looked at Melinda’s flowers, they came back to the dining room.

“Oh dear!” said Mother.

“Oh my!” gasped Melinda.

Justin’s mouth dropped open.

Chad and Mitch’s eyes both twinkled like they were laughing.

Andi just stood there blinking…

Then Chad and Mitch burst out laughing.

Melinda suddenly looked in the kitchen…………. and shrieked!

 “The eggs!” she shouted.

Then Andi noticed an egg on the stairs. “How did that get there?”

She began walking up the stairs. Everyone began to follow.  Andi was finding eggs all the way up the stairs. Soon she got to her room

Soon everybody was in Andi’s room………..staring at Taffy.

Taffy opened one eye, then the other. She was splattered with eggs, sugar on her head and syrup dripping from her nose. Mitch went down stairs and came back up with a wet rag to wipe Taffy’s face. Then Chad left and came back with a tiny little halter for Taffy. He put it on her and carefully led her down the stairs, out of the house and into the barn. Soon Chad and Mitch would be laughing their heads off.

“I wonder how Taffy got in here”  thought Andi.

The End
